Restored Ruins —
Where Heritage Meets Innovation

Terraços da Luz

From Old to New — A Winery with History and a Future in the South-West Algarve

Picture an old farm that once sheltered goats and horses, surrounded by centuries-old ruins now being lovingly restored. Long known for its almonds and olives, the farm is being reborn as a modern winery that weds the region's rich tradition to a forward-looking approach to wine.

Set in the Barlavento — the windward side of the Algarve — this is a place to savour the beauty of nature and the sea in full, while discovering one of Portugal's lesser-known wine regions.

The old ruins are being carefully restored to preserve the farm's charm and history. Alongside them rise modern cellars, vineyards and tasting rooms, offering our guests an authentic experience.

Terroir — Land, Soils, Vines

A Truly Singular Terroir for Exceptional Wines

01

The Setting

Proximity to the sea, abundant sunshine, a mild climate the year round and a constant breeze together shape wines of rare intensity and character.

02

The Climate

Wide swings between day and night temperatures preserve the wines' acidity and complex aromatics, lending them a fresh, beautifully balanced taste.

03

The Vines

The vines nestle among almond, olive and orange trees. Clay-rich soils, dense with nutrients and minerals, give the grapes singular growing conditions and lend the wines their signature freshness and complexity.

Grape Varieties of Portugal

Our wines are crafted from Portugal's native grapes — wonderfully diverse and utterly distinctive

White Wine

Sauvignon Blanc

Fresh, vibrant wines with pronounced aromas of citrus, green apple, gooseberry and herbs. Versatile — from light and refreshing to complex and age-worthy.

Chenin Blanc

A broad spectrum of styles, from crisp and bracing to full-bodied and honeyed. Notes of apple, honey and blossom, sometimes with a mineral edge. Prized for its versatility and ageing potential.

Viognier

Intensely aromatic, with apricot, peach and floral notes. Often full and creamy, with a pleasing, lingering freshness — a special choice for the discerning palate.

Verdelho

Aromatic, fresh wines with an appealing acidity. Characteristic of the Algarve region.

Arinto

Fresh and lively, with marked acidity and aromas of citrus, green apple and minerals. Ideal for summer and a natural match for seafood.

Viosinho

A fresh, aromatic profile of citrus, green fruit and the occasional floral nuance. Light, zesty and thoroughly refreshing — perfect for warm days.

Rabigato

Lively acidity, mineral notes and aromas of citrus, green apple and the occasional hint of herbs. A hallmark of the Douro Valley.

Encruzado

Elegant, mineral wines, often from the higher-altitude vineyards. A fine structure with an appealing freshness.

Red Wine

Negra Mole

One of Portugal's oldest grapes, especially widespread in the Algarve. Fruit-forward, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum. Soft, velvety and fresh — lovely young, yet gaining complexity with age.

Touriga Franca

An elegant variety of fine structure, with complex aromas of dark fruit, violet and spice and a pleasing tannic frame. A contributor to the wines' longevity.

Alicante Bouschet

Distinctive for its deep-red flesh, which lends the wines an intense colour. Full, powerful and aromatic, with notes of dark berries, cherry and spice.

Syrah

A dark, powerful grape with complex aromas of black berries, plum, pepper and spice — at times with a hint of smoke or leather.

Aragonez (Tempranillo)

Renowned for its fruitiness and velvety tannins. Aromas of red berries, cherry, plum and spice — and a touch of vanilla when aged in oak.

Castelão

A robust grape yielding deep-red wines with fruity, spicy notes. Widely planted across many regions of Portugal.

Touriga Nacional

One of Portugal's most celebrated grapes. Renowned for its intense colour, complex aromatics and the potential to produce long-lived wines of exceptional quality.

Together, these grapes help safeguard the diversity and singularity of Portuguese wine. In the Algarve, the wines often mirror the region's sunlit, vibrant character — fresh, aromatic and made to be enjoyed on warm and cooler days alike.

Our Philosophy

“We don't try to make wine that tastes like everywhere. We make wine that tastes like here — like this clay, this coast, this year.”

Our Terraços da Luz vineyard is blessed by this very light. We invite you to discover our wines upon the terraces of the light.
